We begin a new study series this week during adult Sunday School from a book written by Leon Morris titled ‘The Atonement: Its Meaning and Significance’.
Throughout the Bible the central question is, “How can sinful man ever be accepted by a holy God?” The Bible takes sin seriously, much more seriously than do the other literature’s that have come down to us from antiquity. It sees sin as a barrier separating man from God (Isa. 59:2), a barrier that man erected but is quite unable to demolish. But the truth on which the Bible insists is that God has dealt with the problem. He has made the way whereby sinners may find pardon, God’s enemies may find peace. Salvation is never seen as a human achievement.
What is the meaning and significance of the atonement? The Bible uses a host of terms to illuminate the answers to these questions: covenant, sacrifice, the Day of Atonement, Passover, redemption, reconciliation, propitiation, justification. In plain English Leon Morris explains each of these words, thus opening up to us the fuller biblical dimension of God’s great salvation.
Please come join us as we explore the richness of God’s mercy as expressed in the atoning sacrifice of Christ.
